Light Rail Emissions As Bad As SUV Emissions

Last week, the Cato Institute released my report on rail transit and the environment. The report shows that most light-rail lines use as much energy per passenger mile as an SUV and emit as much greenhouse gases as the average automobile. I conclude that cities that want to save energy or minimize greenhouse gas emissions should not build rail transit, but should instead take steps to reduce emissions from automobiles by relieving congestion.

You can download the full report from http://www.cato.org/pubs/pas/pa-615.pdf

I will be presenting this report at the 2008 Preserving the American Dream conference in Houston this May 16-18. The conference will also feature speakers on the environmental impacts of various land uses and residential densities as well as many other topics. Plus this will be an unparalleled opportunity to see what life is like in a major city without zoning. For more information, go to

I hope to see you in Houston.

Best wishes,

Do you realize that you are fighting light transit with a non issue.

By making this argument you are confirming for Al Gore that you believe greenhouse gases/global warming is a concern.

We wouldnt need this POS if they hadnt scrapped one of the most expansive streetcar lines in the Nation in 1952....
BTW... the pre-52 cost per mile of rail and electric??? $100,000

Beleving that CO2 emissions are not a concern is ignorant. Try sitting in your garage with the car running if you disagree. Stop fighting change and we will all be able to breath easier.

I can't say that LRT is the answer for every community, because it is not. But urban sprawl is ruining our country and polluting our air for the future generations.

Here's an idea, lets park the cars, miss the buses, and build sustainable, walking communities were we lead healthy and possitive livestyles.
