Beware The Veto Bandito

Last week Governor Pawlenty brandished his veto pen at his State Of The State address in Saint Cloud. Most pundits firmly believe that Pawlenty will be able to veto effectively this year without being over-ridden. I'm one of the few that believes his vetoes will not be adequately protected in the House. The veto overide is already a sure thing in the Senate. Beware the Veto Bandito!

Majority Leader Marty Seifert spoke at length Saturday on the radio about the solidarity of the House republicans. I certainly hope he's right about that. But I have my doubts. I do not think that last year's solidarity down the stretch equates to similar solidarity this session.

All the democrats need is five republicans to cave and vote to overide the Governor's veto.

I know of six republicans who will definitely vote for the transportation package the democrats have offered. The vote will be this week. It will obviously pass and then be vetoed by the Governor. What the democrats have offered is not even close to being acceptable to conservatives. Of those six republicans I'm confident that four will vote to overide the Governor's veto.

One more defection and the transportation bill becomes law. I'm concerned.

When are we going to get over this 'Chicken Little Complex'? I especially don't care for the fact that you don't identify any of the supposed defectors. You should know better.

I've talked with 3 different people that've said 2 legislators, Kathy Tinglestad & Ron Earhardt, will vote with the DFL but that the rest of the caucus is rock solid in their support for sustaining Gov. Pawlenty's veto.

With all due respect Gary, the house caucus is not as rock solid as you suggest. I hope to be proven wrong.

You will. Besides, the DFL side isn't solid, either.

Drew - if you are going off of the same "info" as AAA is, you are going to be proven wrong. I know from talking to one of the "suspects" that only one name on that list is even thinking about voting to over-ride the veto AND there are more than a few Iron Range Dems and first term Dems in "borrowed" seats who understand that voting with Speaker Kelliher on the over-ride would be political SUICIDE!
